In his late teens and early 20’s he worked as a prawn fisherman before starting with the Liquor Board at the age of 23. As time went on, he realized that he was ready to leave his hometown and explore where life would lead him. He first spent a year in Victoria commuting back for work in Powell River then moved to Vancouver when his transfer with the Liquor Board was approved. It didn’t take long to start fitting into the city and enjoying his new life, making friends and exploring his new found freedom. 10 years later and he cannot believe how his life has changed.

met at a café called Death By Chocolate. Andy got a part time job on Sundays for a little extra money. Mark needed a change and a reason to get away from the house he shared with 3 other roommates that were driving him crazy. Every chance he got, Mark would go to the gym downtown. After his workout one Sunday, he walked down to Denman Street and stopped for a coffee at Death By Chocolate. After seeing Andy behind the counter (who made him an Americano), it became a weekly Sunday ritual. After several months of mutual stares, flirtatious conversation and impure thoughts, Andy finally asked Mark his name. Mark got the courage to call him at work later that day and asked him out. After some confusion as to which Andy Mark wanted to speak to, Andy gave his home number and asked Mark to call him at home. Mark called him later that day (after thinking he was “fake numbered”) and a date was set. Our life together began the following day on September 25, 2000 on a date that lasted from lunch to dinner and then a movie. We moved in together on February 1, 2001 after finding a place that would take our dog Klaatu. From that first date, we have grown to love each other more each day in a relationship that is based on trust, mutual respect and the understanding that we don’t want to change each other in any way. On Pride Day, August 6, 2006, Mark asked Andy if he would like to spend the rest of our lives together. We are getting married on September 22, 2007. |
